 Local athletes set 10 meet records

 

   De Sousa and Stanat both set two new marks at Woodstock Classic

WOODSTOCK, ON. - It was the final invitational before the Thames Valley Regional Athletics championships and athletes from Elgin County and Dorchester showed they are ready for the big meet.

Eight athletes set 10 meet records, including a pair of freshman who broke two each winning events, at the Woodstock Classic track and field meet, at College Avenue secondary school.

Taya

De Sousa

Central Elgin Titans' Taya De Sousa finished first in meet record time of 12.48 seconds, in the midget women's 80-metre and set the new distance of 5.21 metres in long jump. De Sousa was also second, in the 200-metres (27.76 sec.).

Two other Titans joined De Sousa as record breakers

Hannah Onyema won the midget women's shot put, the first ever to break 11 metres at the meet, with a throw of 11.01 metres. Onyema tossed aside the competition on this day, also winning discus (24.64m) and javelin (26.85m).

Hayden Bell won senior men's high jump with a best new height of 1.85 metres. Bell finished sixth in shot put (11.29m).

Parkside Stampeders' Arthur Stanat set new meet marks in midget men's shot put (14.03m) and discus (43.13m). Stanat would have placed second for shot put in the senior division, just one centimetre behind the winner. His discus throw would have been third in senior.

Sparenberg

Anij Sparenberg tossed the discus to a new mark of 30.03 metres at the junior women's level. She also placed second in shot put (10.13m) and third in javelin (29.94m)

Jack Carlson has the new best time in the midget men's 200-metres (24.06 sec.), and also placed second in the 400m (55.54 sec.)

Michael Roth was the first to the finish line in a record time of 24.06 seconds, in the junior men's 200 metres. Roth was second in the 400 (55.54 sec.)

East Elgin Eagles' Adam Dekraker cleared 6.08 metres in junior men's pole vault, setting a new meet mark.

The TVRA championships are May 16-17, at TD Stadium in London. The top 10 in each event advance to the WOSSAA meet, May 24-25, at TD Stadium.
